Create and restore an encrypted workspace backup

An AgentMemory backup contains the local workspace database. The app can encrypt the backup file with a password and validates it before restoration.

Create a private backup

Choose Save local backup in the desktop app and use a password of 12–128 characters. The backup is written as an `.ambackup` file. Save the file somewhere you control and keep the password separately; AgentMemory cannot recover a lost password.

Choose whether to include project files

The backup dialog includes an Include imported project files checkbox. When enabled, imported text snapshots and their history are included. When disabled, file records, file revisions, checkpoint file copies and file links are removed from the backup; other project memories remain. This does not back up entire external folders, binary assets, or changes made since the last file import. Restoring included files creates private text copies in the workspace without overwriting the original paths.

Encryption details

The backup format uses AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption with a key derived by scrypt, a random salt, and a random nonce. An incorrect password or changed file is rejected.

Restore safely

Choose Restore local backup, select the file, and enter its password. The app checks SQLite integrity and record relationships, then saves a recovery copy of the current workspace before replacement. A failed password or invalid backup leaves current records unchanged.

What restore changes

Projects, memories, task states, checkpoints, revisions, and import/file-link history are restored where present. Rebuild optional embeddings after restoration. The recovery copy created by restore is an unencrypted local SQLite file; protect the workspace folder.

Set your backup preference

Desktop Settings lets you choose the default file-inclusion option for future backups. You can override it in each backup dialog. Settings also let you reopen the last selected project, enlarge reading text and configure an optional local Ollama model. All preferences stay on the computer.
