Local and cloud AI memory: compare the tradeoffs

Storage location affects availability, synchronization, and who can process project content. Choose based on your workflow and the sensitivity of the information.

Local storage

Local workspaces keep records on a device and can reduce the amount of project content sent to a service. You need to protect the computer, create backups, and plan how to move data between devices. AgentMemory stores project records in a local SQLite workspace and does not sync them.

Cloud services

Hosted storage can make information available across devices and simplify some recovery tasks. It also means content is handled by a provider’s systems. Review retention, access controls, export, deletion, and security practices before using it for sensitive work.

Questions to ask

Which data leaves your device? Are search indexes and embeddings local? Can you export and restore? What happens when you revoke a device or close an account? Consider the full workflow, including clipboard and AI-provider sharing.
